A Guide to Rolling Papers

There are unlimited ways to roll a joint. The benefits of rolling your own joint is that it is cheap, accessible and maintains the integrity of the weed. Throughout the past few years, rolling has transformed from a back-alley activity to an expressive form of individuality throughout the cannabis community. Smokers are starting to develop a taste and preference for their own personalized joints. Because of this, rolling accessories have also seen a lot of growth and diversification. Today, we will be discussing what factors make quality ‘paps’ and providing recommendations on our favourite rolling papers.

The Anatomy of Rolling Papers

There are 3 key components of rolling papers: fiber, size and seal.

Fibers determine the taste of your joint with the most popular fiber being hemp or flaxseed. The type of fiber in your rolling papers also determines the thickness and flavor of your burn. Lightweight, natural papers complement quality bud while thicker papers made from wood or tobacco leaf provide a fuller robust burn. Hemp fibers are the most popular among most experienced cannabis smokers as they allow consumption strictly to materials provided by the cannabis plant.

When choosing papers, you may come across the numbers 1 ¼ and 1 ½. These numbers indicate the size of the rolling papers. Single is your standard size of about 70mm while 1 ¼ holds 25% more bud and 1 ½ holds 50% more.

Finally, the seal is a thin strand at the edge of each paper used to seal off your joint. Most seals are made from Arabic gum and caramelize slightly when burned.

Our Recommendations

Here are our favorite rolling papers:

1. RAW Natural Rolling Papers

Made 100% from hemp plants and finished with a natural tree sap gumline, RAW paps are one of the most natural rolling papers on the market. Each sheet is steam watermarked with our proprietary criss-cross imprint for a smooth and even burn. RAW rolling papers are perfect for a quick and clean roll with quality bud.

2. HAZO Rolling Papers

Made in France, HAZO rolling papers are made with 100% unbleached hemp. They are also vegan and each pack of papers sold results in one tree being planted by HAZO.

3. The Woods by Canadian Lumber

Pressed from wood pulp, The Woods by Canadian Lumber provides a natural heavier burn than your average hemp papers. Similar to other papers, it is sealed with Arabic gum for a little extra caramelization to your burn.

4. Elements 1 ¼

Made in Spain, Elements Rolling Papers are made from rice paper which makes them ultra-thin and less earthy than hemp paps. They burn with almost zero ash except for the natural sugar gum turning into caramel as it burns.

5. Zig Zag Original White Papers

Thin and lightweight, Zig Zag Original White Papers are another cult favorite. Made with natural flax plant fibers, these rolling papers are sealed using 100% natural Arabic gum.
